Vadodara artist-freedom of expression

Chandra Mohan an art student of MS University,Vaodara, India was jailed for 5 days for his paintings, depicting Hindu Goddess ' Durga' in nude with a full grown human male emerging out of her sexual organs, and another depicting Jesus Christ in sexual manner. There is a big hue and cry about artistic freedom in India, and among MSU alumni across the world. There were demonstrations condemning the Gujarati Government and the university authorities. The question now is whether artists have absolute freedom to paint anything they want. I think they do not. Freedom of expression is not absolute. There are many restrictions ,more so in India, than anywhere else. Could Mr.Chandra Mohan have painted sexually explicit manner one of his close female family members? What is artistic about a sexually explicit painting of a Goddess hurting so many people? What was his motive in insulting so many people with that painting? Can't he use his artistic skills to paint anything better? He does not have absolute freedom in the name of art,and he deserved what he got.
